Why Pray?

“Prayer oneth (unites) the soul to God” Julian of Norwich

Prayer can be a meaningful practice for many people, offering a quiet moment to reflect, express gratitude, and seek guidance. In a busy and often stressful world, it can create space for calm and help individuals feel more grounded in their daily lives.

One important benefit of prayer is emotional support. Many people find that prayer helps reduce feelings of worry by giving them a way to share their concerns and hopes. It may also encourage patience, hope, and inner peace, especially during difficult times. Some research suggests that certain forms of prayer are linked with lower anxiety and greater well-being, although the effects can vary depending on how and why a person prays.

Prayer may also have physical benefits for some people. Because prayer can promote calm and reduce stress, it may help lower blood pressure, ease muscle tension, improve sleep, and support overall well-being. Some studies have also linked regular prayer or other spiritual practices with better coping during illness and recovery. However, these effects are not the same for everyone, and prayer is best understood as a supportive practice rather than a replacement for medical care.

Prayer can also strengthen a sense of connection. For some, it deepens their relationship with God; for others, it reinforces compassion, forgiveness, and care for other people. When practiced within a faith community, prayer may also build belonging and mutual support. Overall, prayer can be a source of comfort, meaning, and resilience, making it a valuable part of spiritual and personal life for many individuals.

How to get started?

Set aside one half hour in the day.

Turn off your phone and reduce distractions.

Talk to God, whatever that means for you, as if you were talking to a good friend.

You may find it helpful to write your prayers in a journal or notebook.

You may find it helpful to use a prayer form like the Lord’s Prayer or to read a Psalm or Bible verse.

There are many prayer apps available as a guide – Pray as You Go, and Lectio 365 are examples.
