Self-Regulation Therapy

Self-regulation therapy is an innovative, body-based therapeutic approach that has gained recognition for its effectiveness in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic stress, and the lingering effects of trauma. Rooted in the pioneering work of Dr Peter Levine and other leaders in somatic therapy, self-regulation therapy focuses on the crucial connection between the body and mind, emphasizing the importance of bodily sensations as the gateway to healing.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which often centres on thoughts and memories, self-regulation therapy adopts a bottom-up perspective. This means it starts with the body—where traumatic responses are often stored—and works upwards to influence the brain and emotions. The aim is to help individuals notice, track, and process internal sensations, allowing them to gradually release or ‘discharge’ the pent-up energy associated with the fight, flight, or freeze responses. By doing so, the nervous system can be restored to a state of balance and equilibrium.
