Journalling: A Therapeutic Tool

 In Articles

Journalling is particularly beneficial for those coping with trauma. This simple, yet powerful habit offers numerous advantages for people of all ages, whether you prefer writing in a notebook, maintaining a digital diary, or following guided prompts. Recording your experiences supports personal growth and well-being.

Having a private space to process difficult memories and emotions helps you gradually make sense of past events and deepens your understanding of your healing journey. Writing serves as a therapeutic outlet, making it possible to express thoughts that may be hard to voice and track positive changes over time. Your journal becomes a metaphorical container for your experience,

When processing trauma, journalling stimulates the neo-cortex and helps you work through your experiences by giving them structure—a beginning, middle, and end—which shifts them away from the limbic system. This process supports moving forward and healing.

Psychologist James Pennebaker found that expressive writing, a type of journalling, significantly boosts both mental and physical health. His research indicates that consistently writing about emotions and thoughts can improve mood, lower stress, and even enhance immune function. These findings highlight the strong link between journalling and overall well-being, demonstrating its value as an evidence-based method for personal development.

How to get started?

  1. Decide what works for you – do you prefer to type or write?
  2. Think about privacy– how will you keep your journal private? It is okay if you need to type and then delete the file. Or write it and rip it up. It is not about saving your journal, it is about the process of writing it in the first place.
  3. Set a timer – start with 10 minutes. You may want to start by lighting a candle or saying a prayer. When the time is up, put your journal away.
  4. When you write, think not only about what happened, but how you felt? Be specific as you can. Naming how you feel about an event is healing, in and of itself.
